Amikam Toren's paintings are originally domestic art; hence the name 'armchair paintings'. The images started out as cheap oil paintings that he bought from a second-hand shop. He then defaced the images by cutting graffiti-like text out of the paintings.
IKON gallery showed these paintings in an exhibition in 2003. What's interesting about the exhibition is where Toren's work was shown: - non-gallery spaces including the stairwell, restaurant and men's toilet.
Does work have to be shown in a white space, even within the gallery?
-Like the idea of being in accessible places where art's not usually shown.
-Think about more interesting places where our exhibition could be, will it have easy public access, such as an outside space?
-Think about whether where art is presented changes people's perceptions of the art.
Also, Toren's graffiti theme is interesting - already associated with spaces such as toilets, - but here it is art.
-We are thinking about an 'anarchy' theme for our exhibition ourselves, so could also be looking at/curating graffiti art in a similar way.
